Spring activity: Coloring Easter Eggs

Our Easter was a wonderful one full of family, laughter, and candy. One of the most special moments was coloring Easter eggs as a family. While Logan sat across from me at the table anxiously waiting for the eggs to cool, I couldn't help but think about his very first Easter when he was only five months old. It seemed so long ago, but yesterday at the very same time.

He insisted we remove his shirt before coloring eggs because he didn't want to get it dirty. It took a long time for the eggs to cool.

So we talked about what colors we could pick.....

and drew Easter related pictures on our newspaper lined table.

When it was finally time, he jumped right in. He insisted on helping with all of them and he picked what color each egg should be. He was one happy bunny.

He colored his own egg his most favorite color: PINK.

Easter egg hunts and pictures with the bunny

To celebrate Easter, we went to an Easter egg hunt. Last year we were able to go to one outside, but that Saturday was rainy so we went to the one at my sister's job.

Logan waiting for the hunt to begin
Once he was able to get in there he really got into it. Soon enough, his basket was full!

Later on, he had to chance to get a picture with the Easter Bunny. He was terrified! I don't really blame him. The bunny had seen better days..... This was the best picture I could get.

Stuff my kid says #7

Today the husband, Logan and I planted flowers and worked a bit in our yard. Logan loved digging in the dirt, and flinging it all over the place. Once everything was in the ground, it was time for the best part. Watering our new plants with the hose, of course was the very best part to a two year old. Logan learned how to work the hose and was very helpful. It was great to see him learning new skills and enjoying some hard work and family time. Once his hand got tired, he passed the hose back to my husband. While me husband finished watering the plants, Logan raced through the hose a few times. Later on, when talking to my sister, he proudly said, "Daddy watered me just like a flower."

Impromptu couponing trip

Today I took a quick trip to pick up diapers and I ended up bringing my coupon folder with me. I didn't really have a plan this time, so I probably could have saved more money, but this is what I ended up buying.

See that box of diapers over there? They are normally twenty-five dollars, but I got the total order for $26.49. Prior to coupons the total was around $40. I saved fifteen dollars using coupons. The best part? All four of the body washes were completely free!

Stuff my kid says #6

Today while playing in our backyard Logan noticed another little boy a little bit older in a yard over. He walked over and had the following conversation.

Logan: Hi! What is your name?
New kid: (Says name).
Logan: Hi!
---silence----
Logan: Mama why he not talking to me?
Logan: Hi. What's your name?
New kid: (Says name).
Logan: Hi. I'm Minnie.

Painting on tinfoil

Painting is a big deal in our household. It is always a good time. It is a go to activity in order to create some instant cheer if Logan is ever acting gloomy. But sometimes I find that it is fun to switch it up. Fresh off of our experience of painting a birdhouse, the little guy requested that we paint again a few days later. This is when I decided to let him stamp Easter shapes. I gave him a piece of paper, but I didn't have a flat paper plate to put paint onto. Instead without really thinking, I grabbed a piece of tin foil.

The stamping was okay, but the tinfoil, well that sent Logan over the moon. He loved watching the swirling colors.

And I have to admit, it was quite pretty. If I had thought about it enough,I might have wanted to press a blank piece of paper down onto it to make it a print to keep.

That being said, clean up was quite a breeze. Just wash the brush off and then crumple up the tin foil and toss in the trash can. Washing the kiddo off might be a different story though.

Spring activity: Painting a birdhouse

We are already starting to make progress on our spring to do list. The other day we went to my BFF's house. My sweetie pie friend bought Logan and her son birdhouses to paint. My little artist had so much fun. He spent a great deal of time getting it just right. He interspersed his work with lots of story telling (like mom getting scared of a spider in the laundry room) and trying to boss around her cats.

He truly loves all art projects, but this provided a 3-D medium that he doesn't often get to enjoy. He even painted the bottom of his birdhouse. I have to say that I am surprised that he branched out from his most favorite color, pink, but he proudly proclaimed he wanted to use "lots of colors."

The finished project!
This little birdhouse has inspired me to go scour the craft store unfinished wood section for more objects that he can put his personal touch on.

Easter fun: Stamping

I have to admit something.....................................I have an addiction to cookie cutters. We use them for lots of other things besides baking cookies. When I see some, I just can't say no. The other day I went to Walmart for some body wash and came across a set of Easter cookie cutters instead. The stamps included two flowers, a butterfly, two rabbit shapes, and an egg. Before putting them to work making cookies, I decided to let the chickadee use them for stamps. Here is the first one that we did together:

This is Logan painting on his own. He decided to add a paint brush and try to paint the outlines in and add some other pictures of his own.

Now, we just need to use them to make our Easter cookies!

Chickadee

I can't take credit for thinking this craft up, Logan's story time teacher did. But I loved it and thought I would share it since it is kind of fitting for a springtime or Easter craft.

The pieces were cut out ahead of time. If you have a little one who is practicing scissor skills, go ahead and let them do some cutting. Then some glue, add some feathers, and ta-da........... a cute little chick. Our little chick accompanied Logan all around the house today. He is currently snuggled with him on the bed fast asleep.

How does your garden grow?

We are going to be starting a vegetable garden in the upcoming weeks, but until then I figured I'd give the little guy something to take care of. We went to a local store and got this tiny planter which included the dirt and strawberry seeds. And for $1.99, the price was right.

I ended up not taking a picture of the rest of the process, I was too busy having fun with the little guy. Logan thought it was great, and when I checked them this morning, it looked like a couple were already starting to sprout!

(By the way, the title of this post could also be: Will you check out the mess behind the kid)?

Orange you glad

This is what happens...........

when you go down the hall to put laundry away.........
and the little guy finds an orange marker.

When I questioned him about it, he said he was "putting on Chapstick."

29 months

Hi there, little guy. You are officially 29 months, but I often forget how many months you are now. I usually just say that you're 2.  Sometime after your second birthday, I stopped saying how old you were by months. We've had a very busy, busy month. We've been on the go with story times, tumbling classes, shopping, visits from family, and playing outside as much as possible.

So what is new this month? You strongly insist on doing EVERYTHING yourself. Need to get in the car? "I'll do it," you say, sticking your little hand out at me. Need to take off your shoes? "I'll do it," you say as you undo the Velcro and start yanking. Need to brush your teeth? "I'll do it," you say as you try to lick the toothpaste off your brush. Your need for independence is obviously a good thing. It's the way that you learn new skills. And just when I start to feel not needed, you will meet someone new and wrap your little arms around my legs. Or you will run up to me and say, "I need some kisses, Mama." It is these little everyday things that mean the world to me. You mean the world to me.

Love always,
Mama

R is for Rainbow, Part 1

This week's focus was the letter R and rainbows. Rainbows are fresh in the little guys mind since we recently celebrated St. Patrick's day. To start the unit we made rainbow cupcakes. I followed the recipe exactly, but I didn't get the gorgeous even layers when they were baked. Instead, we kind of ended up with tie dyed cupcakes, but they were still yummy! We added our whipped cream clouds on top before eating!

I introduced the letter R and did the "r is for rainbow" craft that I found at No Time for Flashcards. He needed some guidance on lining the colors up, but it came out great!

There are millions of art projects on the web pertaining to rainbows. We used contact paper and little pieces of paper to make a rainbow. We hung it in our window and it is currently brightening up our dining room.

Logan laced rainbow colored pasta onto pipe cleaners to make bracelets. He also lined the pasta up and created a pretend piano.

We even snuck some patterning practice in!

We might do a few more rainbow activities this week since we are not quite ready to leave this topic yet.
